Welcome to the Eighth Annual Poetry Month Celebration

Every year, for the past eight, it has been my pleasure and honor to host poets from the DC area, from around the country and, indeed, from around the world, during National Poetry Month. This year is no exception. We have 30 poets lined up who will each be presenting a poem that responds to the challenge I have given them: to take two of their old poems and collage them together with an article from a newspaper or magazine. The results, of course, will be unpredictable but then that’s the point: to create something totally new that takes us to a place we’ve never been.

Over the next 3o days, we will be taken to 30 new and unexpected places. Join us each day for this journey into the unknown.

As always, we will have a judge to choose the best of the 30. This year, Cathy Hailey, the Northern Region Vice President of the Poetry Society of Virginia, will have the unenviable task of choosing the winner. The winning poet will receive a one year subscription to Potomac Review which has been our sponsor for the last couple of years thanks to the editor, John Wang. And Cathy’s response to this year’s challenge will be published on May 1, after the judging has been completed. This will extend our celebration one more day. We can never get enough poetry!

Please join me in thanking John Wang and Potomac Review for their continued support. And please visit their web site and consider subscribing to this vibrant and important publication.

Thank you all. Happy reading.

Mike
