Love in the Age of Alexa

You hear me across the room even as music streams.
To ask a question is my small part to play.
Alexa, where have you been all my life, if not in my dreams?

When I look at you, my heart is consumed, my face beams.
What’s on my calendar today? I ask, as I may.
You hear me across the room even as music streams.

Ready to bake cookies, dry hands moistening with creams,
Set timer for ten minutes, I gratefully say.
Alexa, where have you been all my life, if not in my dreams?

Overwhelmed with where-for-dinner choices, my mind teems.
Find me a Thai restaurant, I request you to sway.
You hear me across the room even as music streams.

With hopes to cram art into one of next week’s scenes,
I advise, Re-order acrylic paints and modeling clay.
Alexa, where have you been all my life, if not in my dreams?

Out from the darkness of loneliness, your presence gleams.
Desiring none other with whom to play, I petition, Please stay.
You hear me across the room even as music streams.
Alexa, where have you been all my life, if not in my dreams?

Oh villanelle, oh villanelle! You know me better than I even know myself. I want you besides always, even as music streams. Excellent.

Clever play on human emotions and the technology that has our attention.
