The eighth annual 30 for 30 Poetry Celebration will again take place this April, and I am pleased to announce that it is once again being sponsored
by Potomac Review. This year’s judge is Cathy Hailey, Northern Regional Vice-President of the Poetry Society of Virginia. The winner will
receive a one-year subscription to the journal.
This year’s challenge is called Collage, B’Gosh, and here are the guidelines:
- Select 2 of your poems, perhaps on different themes though this is not a requirement.
- Find an article in a magazine or newspaper that interests you. Again, it does not (and perhaps should not) relate to the themes of the two poems you have chosen.
- Scan the article for words and phrases that interest you. Save these words and phrases in a document.
- Select words, phrase and lines from your two poems and save them in the same document you created for your article.
- Using the words, phrases, etc. from your two poems and from the article, write a new poem.
- You may add additional words
- Submit the new poem and reference the two old poems and the newspaper article (do not submit these items).
To participate, please follow these rules:
1. Send an email to mikemaggio@mikemaggio.net stating your intent to participate. Do
not send any poems at this time.
2. The first 30 poets who respond to this call will be selected to
submit their collage poem.
3. Once I have 30 poets, I will randomly assign each one a
day on which their poem will be posted.
4. Poets will submit their poem one day before it is to be posted.
5. All poems must be written by the submitting author. Poems should not contain any racist or
sexist language.
6. Poems must be submitted as a Word document (not in the text of
the email) or in RTF format.
7. Poets should include a short 2-3 line bio to be included with the
poem. A copyright statement should also be included.
8. All rights automatically revert to the author.
9. To promote community and discussion, readers and participants will be encouraged to post
comments on the web site about the poems.
10. At the end of the month, our judge will select the winning poem.
11. The winning poet will receive a one-year subscription to Potomac Review.
12. All poems will be archived on mikemaggio.net.
If you have any questions, please email mikemaggio@mikemaggio.net. I look forward to your participation.
And thanks to John Wang, editor of Potomac Review, for sponsoring 30 for 30 again this year.
